gone again...

H and I will be heading out to Oregon early in the morning- 4:15am to be exact.

Back Wednesday night - late,

We have left Chris with a cookie jar filled with homemade oatmeal cookies, the cat and a fish. And about 3 dozen ripe tomatoes needing to be eaten.

camping...

We took a long weekend camping in the NC mountains. Chris choose Mt. Pisgah on the Blue Ridge Parkway - not my choice because it was 3 days of dry camping, but it was his birthday choice and so we let him choose. It is the highest campsite on the parkway so he thought it would be nice and cool.

We left Thursday around 1pm and drove up into the mountains, past Asheville, onto the parkway, thru 8 tunnels and to the park. We had reserved a site so we did a quick pass to see if we liked one better. Nope. We decided to keep the one we'd reserved.

Chris backed in, I chocked the wheels, we unhooked and the trailer rolled.
Ooops.
I chocked the front of the tires but not the rear. So we re-hook up the truck, re-situate the trailer, chocked both sides and unhook the truck. As we go to put out the beds I notice that our bed is sticking out into the road.
Oops.
When we re-situated, the trailer ended up about 6 feet further up.
So we re-hooked up the truck, moved the trailer back and did it all for a 3rd time.
Phew, this time it was good.

We unloaded, set up camp and got dinner going. After dinner we went to a ranger campfire with a presentation on hummingbirds.

The next morning it was cool but not cold. A fire was ok and a long sleeved shirt. We really thought it would be cooler up there. After breakfast we decided to hike up to Mt. Pisgah - a 1.6 mile hike each way. Up, up, up then down, down, down.

We hiked to that tower in the distance:

From the top:
On the way up:
Came back to camp and rode bikes around the campgrounds, scoping it all out. Boy, I could feel my legs. Later in the day we decided to hike to the Devils Courthouse - only .5 miles up, but really vertical.

We hiked to there:

See our pickup down below???

Saturday we drove to Brevard, checked out the nature center and fish hatchery, and stopped at a roadside waterfall. We did no hiking - Hannah forgot her shoes and only had on flip flops - not hiking shoes. There were a few more waterfalls i wanted to see but ...oh well.

The afternoon - trivial pursuit!
Sunday morning we were going to try to fit a hike in but really, the area was very busy on Saturday and so we decided to take our time, pack up and head home around noon.

The 3 days dry camping...not so bad. I took sponge baths and washed my hair in the camper's shower. I survived.

friday...

Heading off in a few hours to pick H up from camp.
We have had huge thunderstorms every night that she has been gone.
We are pretty sure she has had some fierce ones in the mountains too.
I am not sure how waterproof her chicken coop, er....cabin, has been.
I think she will be happy to get home to a hot shower, queen bed and tv.
On that note, we decided not to go camping this weekend - it has been raining hard every afternoon for about 10 days now.
Camping is not fun in hail, thunder, lightning and torrential rain.
Nope, no fun.
Next weekend - hopefully this weather system will be gone and we will go camping.
And tomorrow is Chris' birthday.
Since we will be home he will probably be mowing the lawn or working on his never-ending-to-do-list.
Happy birthday anyway.

gone, baby gone...

We took H to camp - church camp in the NC mountains. She moved up to a new cabin this year - Rustic. And yeehaw, it is rustic. I believe it is a converted chicken coop. Not sure. They'd had no rain at camp all summer. So far, looks like they've had 2 days of rain since H got there.

Rustic is supposed to do overnighters where they backpack in. Hopefully the rain does not cancel that out. But the lake at the camp is only about 1/2 full and cannot be used with it so low. So they really NEED the rain. But still, rainy days are liable to put a damper on things.

Packed up and ready to go:

With her cabin buddy - Kiley Jane

In Rustic Cabin: (looks pretty rustic)

Saying goodbye to mom and dad:

Have a fun week sport. We miss you.

home again..

Hannah is home from soccer camp. No pictures though. Dead batteries. Ack.

The fridge died wed. am before we went to get her. Luckily we had a nearly empty one on the basement to hold us over. Sears will be here Saturday to replace the compressor. At first they said Tuesday. Excuse me? Six days without a fridge, are you kidding me? Well, for an extra $10, they will come Saturday. Fine, come Saturday. I am not too happy that my less than 4 yr old fridge has now died on my twice. Not happy at all.

Tomorrow - fourth of july parade in the am then we are going to Hickory to see the Crawdads (minor league baseball) play with fireworks after the game. Something we have never done before.

Saturday - wait for the sears man then a birthday party for Chris' friend Joe - one of the Lexington Mafia that he grew up with.

Sunday - church then take Hannah to the mountains for church camp.

So, another busy weekend. Happy Independence Day to all!

lost and found...

Hannah called this morning.
"Momma, did you put my name inside my cleats"
uh-oh.
When Hannah got back from the fields/practice last night, her cleats were not in her bag.
uh-oh
She went to one of the coaches and described them. Yes, they'd found a pair of nike cleats with red swooshes but someone already claimed them.
uh-oh
And no name in the shoes.
It seems I sent Hannah off to camp and did not put her name on ANYTHING. We actually were in the dorm and went out to the car for a sharpie and put her name on her ball.....and forgot everything else.
"okay, I will go and see if the girl that claimed them made a mistake"
"Let me know and I will get you some new cleats and bring them to you"
She called back at lunch - had her cleats back, the other girl had made a mistake.
Phew, worked out ok.

last day of eleven

Every year, I take a photo on the last day of the year. Here is the last day of 11.
